The CDC has experienced several resignations after the director was fired.
The Senate Finance Committee will hear testimony from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on the administration’s 2026 healthcare agenda. The recent firing of Susan Monarez, the former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), will likely be questioned by committee members during this time.
Secretary Kennedy has declined to answer questions publicly about the firing of Monarez, as well as the resignations of other CDC officials. Members of other Senate committees have expressed concern over the turnover, with Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, the chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, calling for “significant oversight” after allegations that Monarez was fired after disagreeing with the secretary’s proposed reduction in vaccination policies. Ranking Member Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont agreed with Chairman Cassidy.
“Serious allegations have been made about the meeting agenda, membership, and lack of scientific process being followed for the now announced [Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices] meeting,” Cassidy wrote in a statement.
Senator Cassidy also serves on the Senate Finance Committee and will be in attendance for Secretary Kennedy’s testimony on September 4.
